Summary
During my summer internship at Oblique Design, I worked on a project for a non-profit organization called Rejoyce Academy, which is run by Coach Joyce Walker. The project involved creating a logo mark and promotional materials for the organization’s Queens of the Court program. Oblique Design is based in Boulder, Colorado, and is owned and founded by Janice Ferrante, who gave me the opportunity to work with her and her team.
Audience
This basketball program is specifically designed for young players between the ages of 8 and 16. The program aims to provide a safe and supportive environment for these players to develop their skills, improve their physical fitness, and learn the fundamentals of the game. The program is tailored to meet the needs of players at different skill levels, from beginners to more advanced players. Our experienced coaches and trainers are dedicated to helping each player reach their full potential and achieve their goals on and off the court.

Challenge
In the summer of 2023, ReJoyce Academy will host an inaugural basketball clinic and community event. This upcoming clinic is an exciting first for Joyce Walker, the founder of Rejoyce Academy. She is launching her new Queens of the Court girls empowerment program, back where it all began, The Dog House. In honor of this special occasion, Garfield’s OG GOAT of Women’s Basketball will be returning home and there will be a celebration of the current Queens of the Court, including the 3-time State Champion Lady Bulldogs. The event will also pay it forward for the community’s next up-and-comers. To create an identity for the clinic, Walker reached out to Oblique Design.
Solution
Oblique Design’s solution features a graffiti writing style for the type treatment, combined with a vibrant and electric color palette. The typeface is superimposed on a stylized scribble of X’s and O’s, resembling a basketball playbook, which alludes to the game itself, but is not the primary focus since the organization represents more than just basketball. The overall logo portrays an athletic, streetwise, and confident energy with a message of “don’t mess with me because I’m a girl” that empowers both girls and the community.
Contribution
Walker selected Bartek’s mark for Queens of the Court, but my mark also made it to the second round of critique. I will be presenting my mark and other assets that I created. I mixed and edited the music and created two videos for the brand’s launch on social media, one for the brand’s process and another for the launch itself. Additionally, I designed a promotional poster for the Queens of the Court launch.

Reflection
I was pleased with the promotion assets I created for Queens of the Court. Working with the Oblique Design team was an awesome experience. I took it as a valuable lesson to carefully analyze the design brief and determine the best way to execute the best possible option.
